VOLTA as an enabler of Dumarey’s digital transformation and AI/ML adoption
Effective data management is rapidly becoming a fundamental driver of digital transformation in engineering, as it enables fast and reliable data driven decision making and opens the door to the democratization of simulation. In 2025, Dumarey Automotive Italia conducted a Proof of Concept with ESTECO VOLTA to validate a new approach to SPDM, workflow orchestration and data governance. The Proof of Concept established a centralized combustion data platform that integrates heterogeneous sources, including 1D and 3D CFD together with experimental data, into a consistent and traceable structure that forms the foundation for analytics, surrogate modeling and future digital twin initiatives.
Building on this foundation, domain processes were translated into end to end, web-executed workflows that include CAD parameterization, solver runs, surrogate generation and multi-objective exploration. These pipelines were implemented through modeFRONTIER and then deployed into VOLTA, improving process repeatability, transparency and the capability to explore broad design spaces efficiently within combustion design and calibration activities.
Operationally, VOLTA coordinates Dumarey’s heterogeneous IT ecosystem, which includes an HPC environment together with dedicated engineering servers operating across different platforms. The platform also broadened simulation access for Design and Virtual Engineering through web workflows and light user profiles, reinforcing governance and collaboration across teams.
In 2026, the initiative is transitioning from Proof of Concept to a production intent deployment. The strategic objective is to embed robust and reusable workflows into everyday engineering operations, extend the methodology beyond combustion to the wider propulsion engineering domain and ensure that the resulting capabilities support decisions that are faster, more precise and more effective for the customer.
